Fighting Porn and Stealing Lists

Bob Turner — Sun, 03/08/2009 - 11:58

Stolen list thread

This is interesting....Daniel writes

“I've just written a program to compile a list of porn sites (from http://research.internetfilter.com/research.php). After 137 pages of data and 102750 sites, the list is 1,921,126 bytes long. It seems to be working OK (I estimate total run time to be 1hr 30mins on this SLOW machine). This list will be very useful to parents/and-or concerned siblings who wish to use the list in conjunction with a program like DNS Kong (free) to block a LOT of adult-related sites.”

He goes on to express the intention to distribute the application. There is much conversation re the ethics of “stealing” our list. The list is currently over 400,000 porn domains and not100,000 when he discovered it.

You can read that thread here...

So how do we feel about that. Let me give you a music analogy.

At http://www.turnercom.com

I have about 2 or 3 hours of download able high quality original modern compositions ideal for “image and sound”. Now if some student downloaded it and made a video for his project. I would probably not know and it would also be fine by me if I did know. It would be considerate (and smart) to ask for permission.

However, if someone took “stole” the music and made a successful commercial distributed film I would likely find out and well that would be illegal and that film would be tied up for years.

It would be a dumb idea to steal the music for a commercial distributed product. What more can I say.

For those interested n trying the free filter you can find it here.
