Banned Width

Available from Zed on CBC: Banned Width

The composer’s electro-acoustic journey to the center of the murky world of the forbidden and the banned is a byteing comment on the amorphic, enduring force of censorship.

The sound chamber reverberates with a recitation of titles captured by the sword of the censor, categorized, then banished from bookshelves.

Mixed into the texture are samples of offensive/objectionable phrases transformed into a drone cyborg-like voice from a list embedded in filtering software.

The more things seem to change the more they seem to remain the same.

Note: Recent USA decisions now require all public libraries to install Internet Filtering software or forgo funding.

Composed, produced and performed by Bob Turner © 2004 SOCAN
