Justice Department refusal to investigate and prosecute Web site customers prompts action. A congressional subcommittee investigating online child pornography has taken bold action -- sending state prosecutors and attorneys general in 46 states the names and credit-card numbers of 1,500 alleged patrons of a child-pornography Web site.

Before Congress adjourned for its August recess, members of the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee forwarded information it had received from Justin Berry, a 19-year-old who had testified in April he operated a child-porn Web site for several years.

Pat Trueman, who headed federal anti-pornography efforts under President George H.W. Bush, said the congressmen had grown impatient with the Justice Department’s failure to prosecute the individuals Berry identified.

Trueman said the department had "dropped the ball" -- and had done nothing with the names the youth had voluntarily provided.

"This really serves to highlight the fact that the Justice Department has not been doing the kind of job they need to do on child exploitation under the current director of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS)," Trueman said.
