Q: What is the password?
When you first install the filter, the default password is:

  • “password”

Once you log in, you can change the password to whatever you want.

Q:What is the purpose of the temporary override and can it be disabled?
The filter is very flexible. For some situations an override is needed. When the override is active, the administrator of the system is emailed with every website that you access. yes, it can be disabled.

Q:How do you set allowed web sites?
You can do two things currently:

  • Enter in a list of sites in notepad, save the file onto the computer, and tell the filter to use that as your allowed web site list.
  • Post the list of sites onto another web server and tell the filter to get the list of sites from that web server.

Option 2 is preferable if you are running the filter on the clients computer.

Q:Is this actual software that is downloaded and installed on my end, or do we go through your company?
The software that you purchase is stand alone software. However you can try out our demonstration proxy easily without downloading any software. For the demonstration HTTP Proxy setting, contact us and we’ll send you the co-ordinates for the demonstration.

Q:How much does it cost and Is the negotiated fee a one time fee, a monthly fee, or a yearly fee?
Generally the licensing fee is a one time fee which allows for free upgrades and the purchase of additional licenses should your system expand at a price point that is favorable to you. Large systems may want to lease annually - but this would be an exception. Our pricing structure is available here.

Q:Can the software lock out all but 3 or 4 web sites?
Yes

Q:The boss doesn’t want himself included, so is there a loop hole or back door to security included, or would I have to implement my own?
It has all the features that you want. Clients can be set to allow unfiltered, logged access for a certain amount of time, and other clients can be set to never be filtered or logged.

Q:Can I install the filter on a Linux, NetBSD, or Mac OS X computer that I am using to share my internet connection with NAT (network address translation) in order to filter all the other computers access automatically?
Yes. By setting your router computer’s firewall settings properly, all other client computers will be forced to access the net via the internet filter.

Q:My linux router computer is under my desk with no keyboard or monitor because all it does is NAT. Can I still use the internet filter on it?
Yes. The installation of the filter can be accomplished remotely, and all filter settings can be done via your web browser on any other machine on your network.

Q:The network is peer to peer… is that a problem? The users access the internet via the router, not the Win2K computer.
If all users are on Windows 2000 or NT, the filter can be installed on all of the clients if needed, and you can still administer them remotely. There are also more advanced options that you can contact us for more info about.

Q:Can I install the server on one computer and force all my Windows NT/2000 computers to use it as their proxy?
Yes. There are two methods. One is with the advanced firewall rules that Linux, NetBSD and Mac OS X provide. This is the preferred method as there does not need to be ANY special settings or software installed on the client computers. The other way is with a special installation mode of the filter that you can use to install a redirection layer on to the rest of your Windows 2000/NT client computers to force them to use the proxy for web browsing.

Q:Can I see and modify the bad URL list and the bad phrase lists that the IF-NOT filter has built-in?
Yes. We can send our customers the unencrypted, modifiable lists that the internet filter uses upon request.
